Friday afternoon golf is a new one to me...
It has been a long time since we played at Quindell. Its much better in the Summer than the winter! The full 18 holes were open except for the 9th where they look like they are building a new green perhaps across a lake?
I played with R after work. We had a good four ball a couple of holes in front and a 2 ball a couple of holes behind. The weather was great (shorts would have been appropriate!) but there was a strongish wind which caused some problems.
I set off well but got into some trouble on the 4th with a tee shot out of bounds to the left (mulligan) then a wayward right shot near to the crean of the 3rd.
The first time across the valley I did ok getting on the green in 3! It went ok for the next few holes.
On the 9th due to ground works we played off the white tee.. thats a first for me.
I got into trouble on the 12th down the valley. This was into the wind and my first ball was lost in the trees. On another day it would have been over. So 3 off the tee and into trouble on the next shot, ended up with a 10!
I lost a ball on the 14th (Par 3) off the tee. I lost a ball on the 15th after a great fairway shot. So not my best round but still great fun!
My putting was less than good with more 3's than 1's.
As usual I played some holes better than I have ever played before and some worse. Especially the 18th where I was in a decent position to go for the green after 2 shots (I did a duff but hey ho).
Sun 27 May 2013 18 Holes at Dummer
In the afternoon... We got there in plenty time so was had 2 quids worth of balls on the range. we were not allowed to start early so we did some bunker practice on the practice hole then some chipping with 9i/pw/and sw. Not too bad either. Lastly some putting which made no difference in the game.
We followed a 3 ball and were followed by a 3 ball. Perfect for us as we managed to keep up and didn't slow up our followers too much. The main problem was the wind... the worst I have come across on a golf course. It was fine down wind but there were not too many of them.
M set off like a proper golfer and on some holes we both played well enough to be mistaken for golfers. On others it was just like the old days.
We had wind behing on the 2nd and 4th which helped but the 3rd and 5th were a pain. I hit what would have normally be a great shot at the par 3 over the lake but it just missed by a foot... thats golf. To avoid the wind I used my reliable but not very usual chip and run with my 3W and my 4r. This was so successful I think that I might practice this style a bit and use it more often.
After the first 9 I was up by 3 holes and M won 2 early on the back 9. However after a few wayward tee shots M was less than happy and even forgot to record all his scores. Thats golf... Toward the end of the round the wind died and we were both knackered and pleased to get to the 18th.
As usual I messed up the 18th which is only the 10th most difficult. This time I hit a good tee using the left hand bank to get me some roll on the fairway. Then I took a 5i and hit a good one that just rolled into he edge of the lake. I got the ball out thats how close it was. So I took a penalty and hit a good 4r almost to the green. This was looking good here in 4. I then hit it over the back.. grr!

Tue 21 May 2013 18 Holes at Paultons
With R.
When we were due to start we noticed a 4 ball with 2 buggies just starting and 1 4 ball following. We opted to do the back 9 first. We ended up following a 3 ball but they always kept just ahead.
Played 9 ok except went in bunker and had trouble getting out. Luckily we play a nice bunker rule. Out in 1 is fine. Any more just counts as 1 penalty. Funny playing back 9 first as I am usually getting more relaxed but it was fine and we soon settled into it.
The weather was perfect warm but hardly any sun which is good as its always hard playing into the Sun at Paultons. No balls were lost by me and I played one of my best rounds. In the end I think that we might have drawn... Because of the sun I played a couple of chip and run shots with my 3W. These work surprisingly well and I am almost temped to practice them except for the fact that I would look a bit odd...
R has played better (lost a couple) but hit some very good drives.

Sun 19 May 2013 Chichester Par 3 then Tower 18 Holes
With M. Breakfast at Harvester .. always a good start.
Slight drizzle at start of par 3. Both started off poorly but I played fine. We quickly caught 3 playing and missed out 6 and 7 so that we could get to 18 hole tee time on time.
We were behind a 2 ball that we never caught up and who gave up at about 12. We were followed by a couple who just kept a nice distance behind.
I started off with a surprise, over hitting from the first tee. Hit a bad one right on 3rd. Got lucky off tee on 4th quite right. I always play the 5th terribly but today I got over the water with no trouble (thanks to 4i). M was on the other fairway. On 7th M hit tree and it landed on fairway, hit another tree back on fairway then lost ball in field. On 8th M hit green and 1 putted for a birdy!!!!
After a few holes the drizzle stopped and we found we were left with waterproofs that were too hot.
M played shot of the day on 17th getting well towards 150 to go. His 2nd shot went in bunker. we were pretty even all the way round. We could have drawn if I had managed to win the last hole. As I had not taken a mulligan the I would have won on a technicality. I lost the last hole so M won by 2.
I did not lose any balls... M only lost 1.

Fri 17 May 2013 Practice 100+ Balls
Twice in 1 week.
I had the intension of playing another imaginary game at Chichester but I got sidetracked and spent time playing with different sticks starting with a tee shot and going down in steps of 2.
E.g
4r, 5i, 7i, 9i.
3W 4i 6i 8i pw.
I was trying to keep the follow through working with a straighter right arm as it seems to me it produces a better shot. Sometimes I remembered and others I forgot.
Thats golf. Still it was a nice day.
I though I had lost my hat but someone had handed it in so thats good.
Fun! Bring on the weekend with real grass and stuff at Chichester!

Wed 15 May 2013 Practice 100+ Balls
It has been a few weeks since my last practice. First few hits felt very strange.
Started with 9/8/7 about 10 balls then played an imaginary game at Chichester Tower (ready for the weekend). I think I would be happy with my imaginary round (but thats practice no relation to the real thing).
For the first time in a while I used my trusty 4 iron and its back in the bag now ready for the weekend. At the end of my imaginary game I had about 30 balls left and I did a bit of an experiment to find the most reliable of 4i, 4r, 5w, 3w. I have to say it was the 4i followed by the 4r the others had a very right tendency.
Good fun!

Sun 5 May 2013 Lincolnshire Golf practice and games
On a camping holiday... luckily this was first good weekend of year.
With M. We started off with 25 balls each at Silk Willoughby. The practice facilities were the best I have seen. The mats were new and the driving range grass was as good as any fairway. The balls were rolling well.
The off to Stoke Rochford for 18 holes. We arrived in time to follow a 3 ball who were good enough to keep well ahead of us. We were followed by a three ball in buggies. Its never good to e followed by buggies as they can always catch up and seem to be waiting for every shot. We let them through after about 6 holes. The next 3 behind us were also good but did not seem to be in any rush.
M had a bad start by hitting 2 drives out of bounds from the first tee. I had a steady start over the first 6 holes. I messed up the 6th on the green with a 4 put... grr. M was erratic off the tee until the 8th. Then the 8/9/10/11(almost on green) and 12(on green) were great then it went back to erratic.
We had a bad time on the 7th across the river. I hit a good shot that seemed to go towards the golfers leaving the green. I shouted "fore" and never found the ball. M hit a duff that just made it down the hill. He then hit one into the trees/river. Took a penalty and hit one onto the green that bounced right and we never found it.
On the 8th I hit a duff, took my mulligan and hit one that bounced on the path and just made the other side. M hit a long shot right.. we thought it would be lost. I hit my ball with a perfectly good shot and I saw it land on the sloping fairway. I then went to help M find his ball. He did! When I went to find my ball it was nowhere to be found. So that was too many balls lost in such a short time. It unnerved us both and I took a little while to recover.
The weather was amazing tee shirts all the way round. We found it quite hard work. In the end I think I won.... just.

Wed 1 May 2013 Romsey Golf Club - Another Sunny Day
Booked for 4 o'clock started a bit before. Great deal twilight for 15 quid each. Played with R. No one in front or behind. This is my attempt to remember...
1st hole going away from clubhouse not too long but you must get over the rough.
2nd hole coming back up towards clubhouse and the clubhouse customers.
3rd hole par 3 with nets to the right.
4th hole over a small hill then it drops down before climbing up.
Then long 5th par 3 up a hill that slopes left.
Then the 6th a long drop down the hill with a fairway that slopes right.
The 7th is a long par 3 up the hill to the right fairway sloping left. (R took a second shot off tee and we let 2 golfers through).
The 8th is back down the hill with a fairway sloping right to left. (R found lost ball from earlier hole)
The 9th is down then up very steeply to the green.
The 10th is a downhill par 3. Got on green here.
11th is down dog leg left by hut
12th is back up to hut
13th ?
14th down
15th up to 16th
16th into sun with fairway sloping right.
17th across ditch then right to hole between trees. Landed in ditch but got out well.
18th tee a long way back then back up towards clubhouse scary bunker 50yds before
OK so cant remember it all but I will fill in the gaps next time.
The weather was fantastic. The holes into the low sun are difficult. I think that I played worse than last year but maybe we were not playing strict last year. R won by 1 hole or so.
This is a short course but has plenty of challenges, almost all the fairways are narrow and require straight shots (not my strong point!). It is also quite hilly and the fairways are not flat.
Great fun!
