Tue 26 Feb 2013 Paultons 18 Hole with Practice

With R.

Got there in time to get some practice balls... In shop purchased a stand bag that I have been looking at for several months now. It had gone up 10 quid from when I first saw it!  Anyway the deal was good as we played for 10 quid each and got 60 free range balls.

Spent a little time transferring my stuff to my new bag. No point having it if I am not going to use it.

30 balls seemed like a few too many but it definitely made a difference to my first few holes!

Must make a note to do this any time we get time...

The weather was overcast and cold but not freezing. There was no one in front. The one guy behind went past us at hole 5.

My first hole was a miracle as I managed a par. (Normally this hole is a disaster).  The second started bad (right right right) but I settled down and managed to play the first 7 holes quite well. The 8th par 3 was a bit of a pain as I went over and the 9th was ok but spoilt by a 3 put.

At the end of the first 9 R was ahead by 1 hole. The first 4 of the back 9 were won by R. This meant that I had to win the last 5 holes to make a draw... I did! Great handicapping.

It was getting dark on the 17th and 18th so we used the glowing balls for the first time. They seemed a lot harder than normal balls and may have been the cause of R's collapse on the last hole!

The bag was a great success, took a few holes to get into te rhythm but it works fine. It can go places trolleys can not go and you can always choose the right stick. Like it! It makes a big difference having the weight distributed evenly like a rucksack.

Tue 19 Feb 2013 Paultons Park 18 Holes

With R at 2 ish.

15 quid.

Course had dried out nicely and there were no temporary greens. There were several fixed tees and most bunkers looked like GUR.

There was no one before us and a pair behind soon slipped backwards as we made steady progress.

The weather was the best this year and I just wore a polo short until the 12th. As usual I started off not great but got better. I especially hate the 2nd hole as I have never warmed up and its a long way. R was winning in the first half but I pulled a few back on the back 9 and we ended up with a draw (on the last hole).

We easily finished before dark. We waited while the Sun went behind the trees so that we could see that ball on the 17th.

Results are here.

Sat 16 Feb 2013 Quindell 18 Holes

At 12:00 ish with M.

This was a groupon including a bacon roll. Not bad value for a Saturday. However there as a dreaded trolley ban. Neither of us are really prepared as we only have trolly bags. So its time to dump all clubs except 5/6/7/9 4r/3w and putter.

Weather fine and its only a light jumper required!

The ground is very wet and only the first 11 holes are available. Sadly most greens are temporary so we play max 2 puts as they are so bad. This most likely gives us better scores. We opt for 2 rounds of 9 to decide this weeks winner. There are only a few other players we never really come into contact so it makes it easy to play at our own pace. We both have a nightmare on the 6th loosing 3 balls, we saw where they landed but the height into the soft ground must have buried them. Grr..

Nothing too drastic to report otherwise. When we got to the end of 2 times 9 we had a bit of fun going round holes 10 and 11 a coule of times. Both knackered after carrying the bags. Perhaps its time to invest in proper lightweight carry bags with stand up poles.

Scores are here.

Fri 15 Feb 2013 Lesson

A shame that I had not had much time to practice lately due to the poor weather.

This is my memory of the lesson...

Started hitting 7 iron took video. Perhaps a bit better than usual. Took a 7 iron off grass and it went OK. Very muddy!

Look at video showed that setup needed to be a bit closer to the ball. Thats the thing to concentrate on for the next few weeks.

Also had a bit of a go at hitting 5 Wood off mat. Not too successful needs practice I think.

As usual I rushed some shots and am inclined to forget to hold the pose at the end....

Had a go at 60 deg wedge and was rubbish (lets just say hard hats may have been required), then relaxed and it worked... Thats golf!

This is what my "Pro" wrote:

Setup: Make sure you are not to far away from the ball.

Fairway wood: "Strawberry Moose" (for rhythm). Its gotten a little bit too quick and floppy. Ball position further forward for this club.

Lob wedge: High shot, feet further apart. Think of throwing and follow through.

Sat 10 Feb 2013 18 Holes at Dummer

We had to ring the course en-route as it was snowing a blizzard. They were open.

M there early we arrived a bit late. Never mind had time to hit a quids worth of warmup balls before tee off slightly early for 12:00 tee time. Also it was a bargin at 15 quid after 12.

Weather varied between sleet and snow showers but was not much of a problem. Yellow ball was useful as there were patches of snow on fairways.

We set off following no-one but were soon pressured by a 3 ball. The never quite caught up enough to be called through but we felt that we had no time to take it easy. This was proven as we finished in 3 and half hours (a world record for us!). With hindsight we should perhaps have waited and let them go early in the round. You live and learn!

Early on in the round when the weather seemed bad I had problems remembering my umbrella my gloves and the rest. Ended up running back for glove one time to get  it and running back another time only to find I had put it away. Running and golf don't mix! My solution to the glove problem was to leave it in the handle of my trolley! I gave up on the brolly.

We both seemed to play OK. M won the first half and I won the second half. I think I won overall however it was close!

M hit a great shot on 2nd that almost hit green but rolled back into the ditch. I hit a great shot across the big bunker at the 14th almost hit the green and rolled back down to the edge of the bunker. We both managed to get round the lake on the 18th with no lost balls.

My highlight was no mulligans and no lost balls.. perhaps a first.

Fri 8 Feb 2013 Practice 100+ Balls

The weather has been pretty bad lately and I have not played or practiced. Felt a bit strange with a stick!

In the end I used every stick in my bag.

Started off with 9i pretty bad but soon relaxed .. which is the key.

Then worked up the sticks.

The worst was probably my 3W(right right right). My 1W was going OK fo a change.

Fun!
Lets see if it translates onto a round of golf.
