With M.
I joined to get free 9 hole and some cash off rounds. Only need to pay there another 7 or so times to get my money back. Bargin.
We played the par 3 as a warm up and I hit straight if not always with great style. M played a bit left to right but somehow managed to beat me...
The weather was sunny but soon got cold when the sun went in. Also it was windy which caused a few tee shots to stop in the air.
We have never had the golf course to ourselves, it was great. No one in front and only a lone golfer behind but he kept repeating holes I think and never actually caught us.
For me it was a strange game as I hit some very good fairway 6 irons onto greens but mainly failed to get on the fairway from the tee. The day before I hardly missed a fairway. So its a funny old game as I am definitely better than I was this time last year but can still have a nightmare on an odd hole.
M was on fire on the front 9 hitting his 3W straight and long and getting lots of fairways. As usual I got better as the game went on but not good enough to win today.
I had a really bad 5th which I always struggle with. I had a bad 8th in the trees to the right of the green and for some reason got stuck on the left approaching the 9th green. The other bad holes were the 12th coming back to the clubhouse where I had a couple of duffs and also the 17th where I lost a ball in the lake.
I have played these holes ok in the past so I have just got to put it together.
The course was quite dry so the ball bounced well if it hit the fairway but there was enough mud to mean that the ball cleaners had a good workout. Also needed to clean some of my clubs is water bunkers as the grass would not wipe off. Boring info I know...
As the round wore on... the heat wore off and gloves were needed between shots.
So today it was M's victory but only just!
My rounds are: here and here.
Sat 30 Mar 2013 Paultons 18 Holes
With M.
Nice Saturday golf in reasonable weather...
As usual Paultons had double booked us as the online system does not match reality.
In future we were told to ring to book.
We hit 30 or so balls each before starting. On the tee we chatted to the Scottish timekeeper.
We followed a 3 ball and were followed by a 2 ball. No rush.
Started off nicely and we both played as well as we have played before...
M had forgotten the trophy so it was only right that he lost and I won the virtual trophy.
M did not use the driver so that may have contributed to his score....
I only used my lower clubs and that no doubt helped my score.
At 9 holes the two ball following gave up and another appeared in their place.
On the 12 it was positively sunny an amazing improvement on last week.
Looking at my game I find that all of my tee shots were straight and my worst one was into the lake at 15. Perhaps I am getting a bit better?

Sun 23 Mar 2013 Dummer 18 Holes
This should have been titled "frozen things".
It started off badly with the range balls frozen so we got 2 balls each for our 1 pound.
This was sorted by the pro at Dummer. We were given 2 quid credit and the machine duly let us have a few more balls.
We set off behind a 4 ball and were followed by 2 ball. It was very cold. On the journey there the temp was 0 as we arrived at Dummer it dropped to -1. I set off badly but M was on a roll.
M went very well until we saw his orange ball roll into a bunker. When we got there the ball was no where to be found. Spooky? Rabbits were the number 1 suspect.
This was an experience for me I needed gloves between every shot and as we progressed the cold got colder. There was also a strong wind which made us feel the chill factor and it stopped a few balls dead in the air.
After the 9th, the leading and following golfers dropped out so we knew it was tough.
I put on my last layer but it made little difference.
We had a laugh when we came to try the Snickers bars. They almost broke our teeth as they were frozen. The strange thing was the frozen greens which somehow managed to freeze my putter.
On the whole this was tough. I never did a comfortable swing and was glad to finish.
That's not saying I did not enjoy it. Just more difficult than usual. M won by all scoring methods. I will post results soon.

Fri 22 Mar 2013 Practice 100+ Balls
I have not been to the range for a while so I wondered how I would get on. The weather was poor but OK inside the range.
Started as usual with 9i chipping and it all went well. Perhaps it helped with a midweek practice! Worked up through the clubs to 3W mostly went well. Then took 2 shots with every stick as I put them away and I was happy with the results.
Only a few duff shots off the tee a few more right than I would like but this was good Friday afternoon fun.

Wed 20 Mar 2013 Practice at Meon Valley
There is a practice pitch and put area with a bunker and a couple of good greens for putting.
I went along with R for a practice as the weather had not been good enough to play 18 holes.
This was a repeat of last year when I got my new sticks.
We did chipping onto the chipping green at 20/30/40/50/60 and 70 Yds.
This year I was almost as good (lucky as?) R. Last year I had no idea where the
ball might end up. So my short game is definitely better than it was a year ago.
We also did a bit of raking the bunker and a bunker practice. The sand was too wet but I managed a couple of shots out with the correct amount of sand. Its hard to aim behind and under the ball!
Finally we did some putting and again I was as lucky as R!
Mental note to come back to play here (its where it all started a couple of years ago).
Play the 9 hole again and have a bash at the 18 hole.
Great fun, must do some range practice before the weekend.

Sat Mar 9 2013 18 Holes at Dainton Park
This was a rare experience for me... a new proper golf course by myself. We were at Torquay and I attempted to book at Torquay but they claimed no tee times until 4 o'clock. Dainton said come along about 1 15 and we will fit you in. An absolute bargain for Saturday afternoon at 14 quid.
I got my tee time of 13:31 and went to change in the car during an absolute deluge... However it stopped almost as quick and by the time I had hit 30 warm up balls it had stopped raining. I was following a match 4 ball playing some alternate hitting game. On the first hole I saw both teams get into trouble in a bush by the first small lake. I hit a nice wood and got down with a 1 putt for 6. I was followed by 2 young lads. It was slow but I was in no rush and all went along nicely.
I had several bits of luck along the way. I hit at least 2 trees and got a good bounce. I hit some nice tee shots in the early part of the game but this did not continue into the last 9. The course was a real treat lots of hills and plenty space to make a good impression off the tee. I will definitely come back here.
For some reason the 4 ball missed out a hole to jump infront of the 2 lads infront of them. I was then left following a 2 ball of big hitters and followed by the two young lads. They were all better than me. Despite this I played steadily towards each hole and only lost 1 ball. In the second half I was not getting good tee shots but my second shot was almost always a good one.
Playing by myself is not as much fun as playing with my mates but its is still fun!

Tue 5 Mar 2013 Paultons 30 Ball + 18 Holes
With R.
In warmup I could not hit anything, in game I relaxed and remembered what to do to hit a golf ball.
Its a funny old game.
Weather glorious. Set off behind a 2 ball that got away. Followed by a 1 ball that gave up and went off at hole 6. Gave way to a 2 ball on the 9th.
Today we were playing Stableford. Turned out to be good for me as I think I won. Wait for scores. I had no mulligans and played ok ish off the tee. R was not on best form. The sun was to bright at start of 16th. Should have waited for it to go before tee shots but hey ho thats hind-sight. I think that with a bit more care/luck I could have scored under 100 but I am pleased anyway.
scores are here.

Sun 3 Mar 2013 9+18 Holes at Chichester
With M. First time at Chichester this Year!
Warm up was trip round par 3. We jumped to hole 4 to avoid waiting and finished holes 1 to 3 at the end. This was fun I managed to get nothing worse than a 4 and a few 3's. Thats as good as I can hope for. In the end I beat M by all scoring methods. Its a good warm up but I dont think you can beat hitting a few shots from the range.
After warm up we set off on Tower course at about 1:30 ish. There was a kid and his dad in front and no one behind. The kid and dad abandoned after 7 or so holes. We then followed a 2 ball who made better progress than we did so not a lot of hanging about.
The weather was great and we had some problems as the sun got lower on the last few holes.
I set off well but had a shock on the 3rd when I hit a ball into the water (have not done that for a while). Also had a couple of other nightmare holes. One on 8th over water again and the other on the long par 5 coming back to the clubhouse. M was winning by 4 with 3 to go so I had only pride to play for on the last holes. Anyway this was good enough and I lost by 1 hole. Thats golf!
M played well especially on the first 9 and hit some good fairways with his driver. After some poor tee shots I managed to do good recovery on some holes so its not all bad.
I forgot the trophy so thats bad...

Sat 2 Mar 2013 Practice 100+ balls
First practice for a while and it felt like it. Have been spending way too much time on my website.
Hit balls with all sticks starting and 9 and working down to 60 deg wedge. (Not very good at 60). Then back up to Driver.
On the whole I was hitting the balls well enough but as usual most had a right tendency.
Overall... fun as usual!
