Sun 27 Jan 2013 18 Holes at Paultons Park

Played with M Dinner time tee.

Weather bright but threatening rain. Coolish with plenty wind.

We were not the only people booked for 12:04. Initially we followed a 4 ball and were followed by a 2 ball. All good players. Pressure off first tee did me no favours as I hit right into sun and lost ball. On way to first green my 2nd ball was lost in a bunker full of water. 2 balls down in 1 hole is not good for ego. On 3rd tee it started to rain and we let the 2 ball past to take the pressure off us. It worked as we both started to play better. It only rained on us for a few minutes so we were very lucky I think.

A joined as casual caddy at hole 5 or so. (Very casual!)

After that not too bad until hole 17 where the sun was very low and blinding. Ended up losing another ball in rough at left after a good tee shot.

This seemed tough mainly due to the very very wet course. Sill fun though.

Fri 25 Jan 2013 Practice then Lesson

Snow prevented any golf over the last couple of weeks... longest break for me for a long time.

50+ balls for practice.

For a change I started with 5W off tee as if playing first hole at Paultons. Bad idea with no warmup it took me about 25 balls before I felt confident to hit anything with any club. Hey ho live and learn. Anyway managed to relax and hit some decent shots before end of practice. It was very cold!

In lesson spent some time on new 60 degree. Try to get the stick moving quicker at impact. Also hit some 7 iron shots for video. Must get left foot in line (not behind right one). Trying to keep wrists straight on takeaway. Then try to keep wrists loose so that the stick swings through. Finally hit a few with the driver. Not too good this needs more work.

What my teacher said:

Alignment: Bamboo sticks would be a good investment. Pop them down in line with chosen target (train track). Get feet in line.

Swing: Less flop at top for all clubs.

Lob wedge: slow back accelerate through.

Driver: set up ball forward .. keep practicing.

Good lesson.

Sun 13 Jan 2013 18 Holes at Wokefield Park

So this was a free round for 2 with some balls or something.
It is also the biggest golf course we had been to. "Championship" sounds awesome.
We were scared (well I was).

We turned up in plenty time. The car park was full (almost).
The weather was bright but freezing cold.

When we went to claim our tee time we were informed that trolleys were not allowed.
Aaargh... my bag is heavy and M did not have a strap.
Hey ho we want to play golf so off we go to car and dump at least half of our sticks.

We have 50 balls between us for practice and get to the practice zone. Is outside on the top of a hill and he wind is strong and its double freezing. I can hardly hit the ball...

Off to the tee. We wait behind a 4 ball and a 2 ball and are followed by a 3 ball. The 2 ball before us offer for us to join them. We politely refuse as we have no idea how we will manage.

I find that each hole is quite long but dont panic. The progress is very slow and we have to wait for the 2 ball to start at every hole.

Its pretty even between myself and M. We start to struggle at about the 7th where the 2 ball get a gap ahead of us and we cant catch up. By the time we get to the 9th we are knackered. The walk from 9th to 10th is a long one and we have to pass our better halves in the car park. They encourage us to carry on and dont worry about the time.

As we start the final 9 we realise that at least 2 groups infront have called it a day. So we are on our own. We quickly realise that we may struggle to complete in daylight. I am annoyed as I have left my special glowing golf ball at home!

In the end we both manage to complete the course (catching up with a 4 ball followed by a 2 ball).
I leave my 5 iron on the 17th tee and only realise at the 18th. Hey ho. M makes a start on the long par 5 in the gloom and I run half a mile to get my stick and hit my tee shot n the dark. I am confident that it is a good one but it is too dark to find. I make my way to the last flag using a 7 iron and get to the flag in 10. M has played a blinder and got a par 5!

Ok so it was not a great score, but, we learnt something!

Fri 11 Jan 2013 Practice 100 + Balls then Lesson

Friday afternoon practice before lesson.

Hit 9i, Pw, Sw and 60deg.

Then 7, 5, 4, 4r and 5W.

I have had worse practices. A good warm up to my lesson.

Lesson started on 60deg Xmas present. I have to grip half way down, put ball in centre of stance and hit it lightly but get under it. Practice required on this.

Then a general swing checkout using 5i. For me this is risky since I have been happier on lesser clubs. Anyway dont panic just hit it. Use a wider stance for a bit of stability. Practice the half takeaway with no wist movement. I did feel that I was happier to hit a 5i in my lesson than I would have been 6 months ago. Progress?

Good lesson.

This is what my teacher said:

Setup: make sure feet are shoulder width and square. Practice in mirror.

Swing: Turn hands out 1/2 way way back practice 1/2 swing.

Lob wedge: 40/50 Yards max. Smooth swing, soft wrists, go right through.

Will watch feet position and practice 1/2 swing.

Wed 9 Jan 2013 18 Holes at Wickham

Gray day with sun trying but filing to get through.

Played with R.

Following 4 ball, no one really behind until 16th. Temporary greens on 1st, 2nd, 12th and 16th.

2nd hole I took a mulligan off tee as it was pathetic.

3rd hole reasonable shot off tee went right onto fairway except it was so boggy. Not a fairway. Anyway I took a shot and it went 10 yards right and could not be found. So that was a lost ball I took a penalty and walked back out of mud and hit a pathetic shot straight back into mud. Grr. Anyway I took another mulligan and hit a nice shot onto the fairway.

7th hole hit a great fairway shot and R suggested I use my 5 wood. This was a failure. But I took another Mulligan as it was not my choice os club. Good practice though.

The rest of the holes were played without problem. One significant fact was I never did worse that a 2 put and managed 5 1 puts. This was great for my score which was a personal best. I even beat R!

The details are here. One day soon they will be in this blog!

Fun!

Sun 6 Jan 2013 18 Holes at Dummer

With M
9:26 tee time
Thick fog before start and continued to hole 16.  Never played in fog before. About 120 Yards visibility.

Following a 1 ball with his girlfriend. (Until about 10 or 11). Then they must have given up as we were following a 2 ball on a buggy. We were followed by a 3 ball who gave way to a 2 ball at about 16.

This was first opportunity to try out golf shorthand. M had produced a sheet with space to write up to 10 shots. I filled mine in after every shot which turned out to be less hassle than I thought. M filled his in after avery hole (with a better memory than me).

I have not figured out how to get my results onto a webpage but I will put them up here when I figure it out, See my new temporary blog for details  here.

Whats strange to me is that I felt I played OK but still ended up with 110+ being beaten by M by 1!

Thats golf!

Fri 4 Jan 2013 Practice 100+ Balls

60deg Wedge, 9i, 7i, 5i and 5W.

Good fun, I have not been for a practice since the end of November.
Mostly worked. Not many duff shots.

Best thing I noticed was that with my new 5W I can do a really easy swing and it goes quite a way.

I am always being told to relax in my lessons....

60degW seems ok if you hit it right.. need a lesson on this one to find out what I should be trying to do.

Wed 2 Jan 2013 - An idea for golfing shorthand

(c) S.W. Evolution Limited. 2013.

I have been attempting to remember each shot and document it in this blog.
I try to do this so that I can perhaps identify patterns to avoid in the future. Or at least pick out the bad holes and try not to repeat a mistake in the future. Also helps the chat about the 15th in the pub!

I do not seem to be as good as my playing mates at memory games .. so I am considering the following shorthand:

F means fairway shot
S means short of fairway/green perhaps in rough
L means left   of fairway/green perhaps in rough
R means right of fairway/green perhaps in rough
G means on green
E means edge of the green - Added 29/07/2013
H means in the hole (from off the green)!
O means over/off/did not stop on green
B means bunker (fairway or green)
T means some sort of trouble/problem shot (behind tree, edge of cliff, pond, deep rough etc.)
P means penalty (not lost but out of bounds, unplayable,  etc.)
X means ball lost or out of bounds (counts as a special P)
D means a duff shot (you know what I mean!)
M means mulligan/mistake with no penalty
single digit at end is number of puts (unless in hole)

eg. RXFG2 went right was lost, 3 off tee to hit fairway on green and 2 put = 6
eg. OXG1 went over the green and was lost, 3 off tee then on the green and 1 put = 4

More Examples:

Par 3: H means hole in 1
Par 3: G1 means on green and 1 put = Birdy
Par 3: G2 means onto green and 2 put = Par
Par 3: LG1 means left of green, on green and 1 put = Par
Par 3: PPG3 means 3 off tee, on green and 3 put = 2+1+3 = 7
Par3: RXG3 means right and lost, 1 pen, on green and 3 put = 6

Par 4: H means hole in 1
Par 4: G1 or FH means Eagle
Par 4: FG1 or FFH means Birdy.
Par 4: FG2 = fairway, on green and 2 put = Par
Par 4: FRG3 = fairway, right of fairway, on green and 3 put = 3+3 = 6
Par 4: RPFG3 = right of fairway, penalty (perhaps lost), onto fairway after drop onto green and 3 put = 4+3 = 7

Par 5: FH is Albatros?
Par 5: FG1 or FFH is Eagle
Par 5: FFG1 or FFFH is Birdy
Par 5: FFG2 = fairway, fairway, green and 2 put = Par
Par 5: LBFOG2 = left of fairway, in bunker, onto fairway, overback of green, on green and 2 put = 7
Par 5: FFFFG2 = 7
Par 5: MFFFG3 = Mistake off tee (no penalty), fairway, fairway, fairway, green and 3 put.

Geek warning: I am a computer programer at heart so I have been thinking how I might use this to make a nice webpage. Or even a golf website!

This might work.

Type in the following and get out a nice table. (With a bit of help from my new friend Javascript).
