Sat 29 Jun 2013 18 Holes not Dummer but Quindell

A funny old day in lots of ways. First I arrived at Dummer at 12:30 for a 1:30 tee time. Turned out M had booked Quindell for 1:30. Hey ho traffic had been bad getting to Dummer but was Ok getting back. We got there just in time and started following a 2 ball with no-one behind. Due to the location mix-up I had had enough missed phone calls to freeze my phone so there are no pictures. No idea why missed calls should freeze the phone but thats something learnt for another day.

The weather was very hot almost like summer. The course was in good shape. Not sure what they are doing on the 9th and the 18th but we will find out eventually.

Anyway I set off well with a nice fairway, then the green then in the hole for a birdy on the first. The second also started well with a fairway a bit of a duff just before the bushes on the left. Then I lost one in the deep bush. Never mind.

The 2 holes that are normally a problem were both managed well by both. On the 6th I got on the right of the fairway and M went on the 18th fairway, both on the green in 3. On the 12th I just got over the trees with my 3W and M was long through the gap. This was good as we were let through by the 2 ball so it could easily have been embarrassing! M got 5 (good!) and I got 7 due to a bit of bad chipping and putting on my part.

On the whole we played ok and M would have thrashed me if there had been a few less lost balls. He had 4 pars compared to my 1 birdy and 1 par.

In the end I won by 1 hole so the handicaps are ok for now and the trophy has come home. LOL. I was pleased to be under 100 again with no mulligan. I am hoping its a new trend. My score is here. I could have done better on the 2nd (lost ball) and the 7th (poor chip lead to 4 putt) and on the 13th (2 duffs and a lost ball). But as usual great fun!

No photos due to phone freeze.

Wed 26 Jun 2013 18 Holes at Romsey

15 quid for twilight golf, a bargin! With R after work. We were told that an hour behind us there was a competition that would be making fast progress, so we always had to keep going.

The weather was fine and the sun never got so low to stop us seeing the ball.

We were following a 4 ball at first.

On the first I hit a nice shot off the tee and saw it go towards the ditch. When I got there I found it lodged on a concrete thing. I decided that this was a man made obstacle and took a free drop. From here I went into the bunker. The bunker sand was rubbish and so was I. I took 4 to get out but only took one penalty (as agreed). Not the best start for me or for R who went right onto the 2nd fairway from the tee.

I was making good steady progress until the 6th where we were called through by the 4 ball. Never good but on this hole it seemed worse. I hit one right into the trees so 1 lost and 1 penalty. Then from the fairway I hit a nice shot towards the green which vanished so another lost. I did not take another penalty though as I felt it was due to being called through. Still it was my worst hole (an 8).

In the end I beat R easily as I played almost to my handicap over the last 12 holes. I even managed a birdy 3 on the short par 4 15th. A straight but shortish tee shot a 5 iron onto the green and 1 put.

We did not get caught by the fast competition until the 18th so that was ok. They played quick as 2 hit balls from the tee and 2 waited on the fairway. I think it was a Monty Scramble?

My score is here. Great fun as usual and another sub 110 round.

Looking down the 11th.

I think this was the view of the 12th from the same spot.

Sat 22 Jun 2013 18 Holes at Dummer with wind and April Showers

With M. Tee time of 9 20 after Golf Society.

We shared 2 quids worth of balls (14 each I think). The weather was odd, very windy with showers, some heavy but only lasting for an odd hole. We were following a 3 ball who were playing off white tees in some match. We were followed by a lone golfer who we let through on the 2nd. He must have given up at halfway when the rain was heaviest. In the end it took longer then 4 hours so they must have been slow.

I think that the very strong wind and lots of waiting prevented better scores all round.

M is still on +5 from my handicap and he often wins at Dummer, today was no different. For the first time in a while he played well off the tee and only lost a ball on the first shot from the 1st, using his mulligan. He had a very lucky escape on the 18th where his ball rolled to the edge of the water on he lake after a great tee shot.

I played well ish, taking a few extra puts on the first 9 and only messed up the 3rd which was down to a poor tee shot into the strong wind then poor putting, I also messed up the 6th from the green bunker, I went over and then back over, then 2 put. I played the par 3 across the lake onto the green (we both did). I also got to the edge of the green on the par 3 over the big bunker, here I managed my only par of the day. On the 18th I was pleased to get to the edge of the green in 4 and then did a couple of pathetic puts and took 4 more into the hole.

After 9 M was well in the lead but I managed to catch up a bit on the back 9. In the end M won easily after handicap but I was pleased to be under 110 again with no mulligans and no lost balls. My score is here.

Ont 2nd the weather looked great

M getting bunker practice.

Waiting 4 the 3 ball.

After my only par at 14th.

Wed 19 June 2013 18 Holes a Paultons

The weathermen had predicted a thunder storm but happily they were wrong. Not a spot of rain but it was very hot!

With R after work. There were lots of people queuing on the tee but they kept ahead of us with no problem. We followed a 2 ball in a buggy and were followed on the first 9 by a couple.

My round was quite steady managing to keep below 110 again but not beating R this time. The handicaps work well as I could have drawn it by winning the last hole.

I could have scored better if I had not lost  a ball in the trees on the 7th. I took the penalty from the same spot and it was fine. On the 8th par 3 I took 2 out of the bunker and then hit a duff before getting on the green this was my worst hole. On the lake par 3 I hit my fist into the pond (mulligan) then hit my second into the pond.. grr. Then a drop zone shot went over. So thats 2 lost. I was quite pleased with the rest just need a little more luck practice!

The weather was hot and muggy but the lack of sun meant we could see the balls on the 16th and 17th so thats nice!

My score is here.

Those trees on 7th catch more balls than should be expected.

R in action on 12th

The 13th with its narrow start. I did OK here today!

Sun 16 Jun 2013 (Fathers Day) 18 Holes at Quindell

With M. The club house was busy at lunch time but only with eaters not players. That was good for us! We set off with no one in front and no one behind. Must remember that for next year!

The weather had threatened rain but it turned out great no need for a jumper!

On the 1st M hit a good iron shot but found the deep rough on the right and lost a ball. Not the best start but he soon recovered and scored 6 on the 2nd (Par 5).

On the 3rd I hit a poor tee shot trying to lay it up. My 2nd was on the green so that was nice. M went left into the rough and had some trouble.

The rough at Quindell is very deep even though the rest of the course is in good shape.

On the 4th we both ended up a bit out of bounds to the left which (because we were both affected and the balls were easy to play!) we ignored and played anyway.

M had a bad start off the 6th taking 3 to the fairway then hit the green from 190 yds. I took 4 to get to the green with steady progress. There is more than 1 way to get a 6!

Not sure whats happening on the 9th with a short par 4, this is work in progress.  10 and 11 were easy. I had saved my mulligan for 12 and I needed it. After losing a ball right I decided to lay up at the bottom of the hill, a good plan for the future. M had already used his mulligan and lost the first also right. All quiet for me until 16th where I hit the fairway from the tee and then lost a ball left for no good reason.

I was pleased to hit the green on the 17th. On the 18th something strange is happening they seem to be building a new green closer to the tee. Suits me! I lost a ball from the tee on the 18th which was a pity.

In the end I am under 110 again and have my fingers crossed. Score here.

If only we were on winter greens!

M off to another fairway on the 8th

Only us here!

M in action on 15th

The 18th

Thu 13 Jun 2013 18 Holes at Paultons

With R after work...

Fairly late tee time 4:28 but there was no one waiting so we got off early.

No one in front and no one behind .. luxury.

We both played to handicap for the first 3 holes (never happened before). I was feeling good and did handicap or better for the first 11 holes. Then on the short par 3 I went in the bunker and ended with a 5. By the end I only did worse than handicap on 12/14 and 18 so thats a good result for me.

2 guys must have started on the back 9 as they caught us from nowhere. We let them through on the 13th.

From then on there was a bit of waiting about between holes, but no problem it was a very nice day. Started in jumper finished in tee shirt.

Chip and run golf .. its the way forward! Another round near 100 and a win for me. I suspect thee will be a handicap review soon. Look here for results.

This is how good the weather was

Lilly Pond looking good

Sat 8 Jun 18 Holes Dummer

Early morning tee time 7:20 something. Weather sunny traffic light. Great start to the day.

M already there when I arrived but there was a surprising cold wind.

No one to pay at clubhouse so we got 2 quids worth of balls between us (14 each) and went to see how we felt. I was confused because of the low sun I had no idea where my balls were going. M said they were going right so I assume they were. (No change there then!).

We set off just before a group of 3. I hit a nice fairway for a change and M went left, Then M hit one way left near the green and that was the first lost ball. We knew the 3 behind were waiting which did not help.

Anyway on to the second and M hit a ball way left again and we spent a while looking. In the end we called the 3 behind through.

On the 3rd M hit a ball into the big hole on the left and we thought things were not going too well.

On the 4th M hit a ball from the tee into the big hole on the right and we wondered how we were going to get round.... I had hit a nice fairway but then managed to get into the bunker (this should never happen). M had a great shot to the green and managed to win a hole from a bad start. For M this was the turning point as he put his big clubs away and used irons for most of the rest of the round.

Recently I have been winning so M had a few handicap points extra but today M beat me by all possible scoring methods even though I did not play badly.

As we progressed round we managed to keep up with the 3 in front and never got caught by the 3 behind. The weather got better too and it was a glorious sunny day by the time we finished.

Today was the first test for my chip and run driver. Tried it a couple of times but didn't seem to go as far as my 4r or my 3W .. need to try at the range. Maybe its just too long.

I am pleased to be less that 110 again.. wonder how long I can keep this up!

For me I can see a few holes where I should have done better:

4 duffs may have given my 2 shots.

4- 3 puts could have been 2 more.

3 bunkers could have given me 1 or 2 more.

Avoiding the lake on the 18th is 1 more.

On the plus side I hit quite a few fairways and had no mulligans.

My round is here.

Great fun!

M about to make a great recovery on the 4th

The weather!

How did this happen? A 2!

Tue 4 Jun 2013 18 Holes at Paultons

Late tee 4:36 with R weather abs fab.

Still sticking to chip and run golf. Forgot my driver wonder what that can do... Next time!

I only used my 3w 4r 5i 7i 9i and pw. Maybe start to travel light...

No one in front at first but we were waiting a bit for the two in front a bit all the way round. No one behind at the start.

R set off very well playing the front 9 as well as he every had. I set off ok messing up the 2nd as usual by starting off in the very thick rough. I took a penalty and hit a better one off the fairway...

Things took a turn for the better on the long  par 3 6th with a par, then even better on the par 5 with a par, then even better with a 2 at the next par 3. Just one over on the 9th 10th and 11th. Golf is easy when it goes right. My chip onto the green on the 6th got my first clap from a watching golfer on another tee. I had to laugh. We caught the 2 infront by the 12th and they asked if we wanted to make a 4 ball as they were waiting. We declined but they said we were playing great golf. I had to laugh again.

After the short par 3 we were waiting and the lone golfer that appeared behind us asked to join. What could we say he was a nice chap. A left handed golfer with no problem hitting the ball. Me and R went straight into the right hand trees and lost a ball each. Anyway I recovered quicker than R and played steady for the rest of the round to get my best score ever (see here).

What can I say ... great day!

Sun 2nd June 2013 18 Holes at Chichester Tower

A nice early 9:30 tee time... I think early suits me better than late.

I had already eaten but met M in the clubhouse for a coffee while he had his breakfast!

The weather was great perhaps summer is here at last.

We had no one infront and no one behind at the start. We let 2 guys through at the 9th and saw no one the rest of the round ... just as I like it!

I had decided to give my "chip and run" golf style a full round to check that it was a good idea. I have noticed that if I do a chip and run shot it almost always makes good contact and if I hit it hard it can go quite a long way (well long for me). Lately I have used this shot with larger clubs to keep under the wind and when the sun is so bright you could lose a ball... and I found not only is it reliable, it is usually straight. The only downside was it looks a bit odd. (Feet together open stance...). I think I will stick to it and just make minor mods until I get back to a more traditional swing.... Also do not take this as a good bit of advice it is probably a daft idea but I will be happy if my scores come down (even a bit!).

Started off well with a par and 3 bogeys, just starting to think that golf was easy when my ball across the lake at the 5th just slipped off the edge back into the water. I took a penalty then hit a tree. You know how golf is.

M was having a bit of a nightmare mainly playing off the parallel fairway with great recovery shots (sometimes) and a bit of good putting. After about 12 holes he abandoned his big bertha driver and hit some great 4i shots.

One the whole I made steady progress and ended up with a good score (for me).  After analysing the round here I realised that on a perfect day I could have saved  about another 10 shots... dream on...

I had a special bit of luck at the 18th where I managed to get my ball through the tree on the left, then hit the green then 1 put for my first par 4 birdy!

Yippee.
