I got there early so got a couple of quids worth of balls and hit them from the range. The range was mostly full so I used the outside ones. This did not go very well as the tees were very high and the mats very hard. Hey ho.
When M arrived we did a few holes on the 9 hole par 3. It was busy so we ended up playing 2 balls each while waiting. Anyway I started with a couple of 3's and then its was 4s on the rest. M did 4s on every hole. We gave up at the 6th as it was time to go play the 18 hole. Great fun and also great practice.. must be able to get mainly 3's and an odd 2 from 80 to 100 yds. Keep practicing!
This was twilight golf at 10 quid each (we payed for our own to avoid complications!). A bargain!!! We were following a 3 ball with 1 good, 1 ok and 1 guy who was having trouble. After the first few holes they managed to keep ahead of us. Not the fastest round but not too bad either. We were followed by a couple of women golfers but they never caught us.
I set off with a bunker but managed to get out in 1. I also got into bunkers at the 11th and 12th and got out in 1 (could never have done this last year). May have been helped by the quality of the bunkers. As usual I set off using my 4r from the tee on the longer holes and as usual I mainly went right. This is ok but I almost always end up in a bit of trouble from the tee, not good. As the round went on I replaced the 4r with my 4i and found the results were much better the fairways were much easier to hit. Hope this is a new trend (I have not even put my 4i in my bag since I have been chipping and running).
On the 3rd I was lucky to get on the green with my 5i and then had the most luck and 1 put for a birdy from 30 feet. Yippee!
On the 5th which is always a problem for me I just got over the lake with my 3W and managed a 6 as one of my best scores on this hole. Things were going well.
On the dog leg 7th I managed to almost get a view of the green from the tee (using my 4i), this has never happened before.
So on the front 9 I had scored 44, a world record for me by quite a way.
M had problems on the 5th and 7th but managed a par on the 6th. Rare for either of us. This was the first of 4 pars for M he also pared the 10th, 14th and 15th. If he was more consistent I would be in trouble!
On the back 9 I dropped a couple of shots on the 10th getting to the edge of the green in 3 then taking 4 more to get it in the hole. I also dropped a shot on the 11th by getting in the bunker rather than the green.
On the long par 5 coming back to the clubhouse I managed to keep on the fairway (rare for me) but landed in the bunker. This was ok as a 7 is as good as I can do on this long hole. It was hot and we had run out of drinks so while M finished off the 12th I ran to the clubhouse and got supplies of water for both. It was HOT!
I dropped a shot on the par 3 14th with a 3 put that should have been 2. The sun was directly into our eyes on the 16th by the lake. I lost my 1st in the water and took my mulligan. Its always hard when you cant look for your ball due to the sun being low. The mulligan rule is one of ours but I suspect that we should not use it after the first few holes.. maybe next year!
We let a lone golfer through on the 16th but the 3 in front of us didn't let him through so it didn't do him much good.
The 17th can be a nightmare but today my trusty 4i got me past the tree on the fairway and I got just short of the green in 3 and in the hole in 5. My best score on this hole. M hit a straight right and lost one.
I won today and I was pleased with my final score, another sub-100 and with a bit of luck it could have been a few less. My score is here.
